Nephrology is the branch of medical science concerned with medical diseases of the kidneys.  A person is usually born with two kidneys.  You can live with the normal function of one kidney but when both kidneys function is lost then a patient must start dialysis.  Dialysis is a method of artificial kidney function This process removes waste from your body system with the assistance of a machine.

Diseases that affect the kidneys are diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and some hereditary diseases.  Nephrologists are doctors that make the health and well-being of patients better by finding and caring for problems that affect the kidneys function.
